Luke 17:13 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity (mercy) on us!” 14 When he saw them, he said, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?” 19 Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your faith has made you well.”

We find the story of the ten lepers. They had leprosy and were required by law to stay 100 yards away from the crowd. Leprosy was humiliating. Not only did it disfigure and discolor the body the person also had to tear his clothes and put a covering upon his upper lip and say, “unclean” to let everyone know they had leprosy. It was a demonic infirmity. They were banished from family and friends.

When the men saw Jesus, they stood at a distance as required by law. They shouted and asked Jesus to have mercy on them. Mercy in Hebrew means compassion or clemency. Clemency means to have compassion or mercy on a person to provide relief from a criminal conviction.

They were asking Jesus to give them relief from leprosy. They knew only someone with authority (like a Judge) could grant clemency. Also, an advocate has the authority to plead the case on behalf of the client. Jesus is our Mediator and Advocate and will present our case to The Judge and our case will be dismissed and mercy granted!

1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.

1 John 2:1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.

When Jesus saw them, He said, “go show yourself to the priest”. According to the law, you could only show yourself to the priest once you were clean. With Jesus saying this He was proving His authority. In His eyes, it was already done. They were already healed. He granted clemency. He came to do the works of the Father.

John 14:9 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time, and still you do not know Me? Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

John 4:34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Jesus was acting like who He was. He is the Father or God in human flesh. Even though Jesus was the son of man, He was also “God with us”. He not only advocates for us, but He also grants clemency. He forgives and has mercy.

Mark 2:10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.

Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Is 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus was teaching the ten lepers how to walk by faith (literally). He was imparting faith unto them. Faith comes by hearing. When Jesus gives a word, we mix it with faith because you know He is not a liar, He is good, He has the ability, and you know He loves you and He wouldn’t tell you to do something that will hurt you (even if it sounds like it).

God is teaching us a simple faith lifestyle

To obey God, you must know He’s faithful and wise. You also must know that He deals with everyone how He chooses. It’s not a cookie-cutter system. He tells different people different things, and He tells different people the same thing sometimes. You must know or discern what it is He is telling you to do for your situation. When you discern it, obey it, and walk in your health.
